Iowa City, Ia. — President Barack Obama on Thursday challenged Republicans to make the 2010 elections a national referendum on the health care law he championed, arguing that the tactic could be politically risky for them.
On his first national trip to begin building support for the legislation he signed Tuesday, Obama said the new law would be an economic boon, especially for small businesses.
“This is the reform that some folks in Washington are still hollering about, still shouting about,” Obama told a loud and friendly crowd of 3,000 in the University of Iowa Fieldhouse. “Now that we passed it, they’re already promising to repeal it. They’re actually going to run on a platform of repeal in November. And my attitude is: Go for it.”
But some Republican-leaning policy experts interviewed later described as insufficient even the law’s benefits that are aimed at helping small businesses pay for health insurance.
And Iowa’s largest manufacturing employer, John Deere, announced Thursday that the new law would cost the company $150 million.
The Iowa City stop was Obama’s first trip outside the Beltway since signing the bill Tuesday.

The American power producer Exelon said on Tuesday that it had agreed to buy John Deere Renewables , a wind power company, in a deal that may be worth up to $900 million.
The transaction, which is Exelon’s entry into the wind sector, is expected to close by the end of the year. With it, the company is positioning itself for possible regulatory changes.
“Whether harmful emissions are priced or regulated, our combined capacity of nearly 19,000 megawatts of zero-emission wind, solar, hydro, landfill gas and nuclear power remains a clear competitive advantage that will only become more valuable,” said John W. Rowe, head of Exelon.
Exelon used Barclays Capital as adviser and Foley & Lardner as counsel, with McDermott Will & Emery advising on certain tax issues.
A year ago, Exelon tried and failed to buy a rival power producer, NRG .
