With the precision and speed of an assembly line, hundreds of volunteers are busy scurrying around this week at John Deere Pavilion to construct a life-sized combine sculpture out of cans of food.
Using 300,000 cans - selected specifically for their color by the project's architect - the army of John Deere employees, retirees, families and others are building a replica of the company's new S-Series combine. Project Can Do, which will be unveiled Thursday, will be on display through mid-December at the Moline pavilion.
The project is a salute to the role farmers play in feeding the world as well as a community effort to help feed the hungry. The cans, which fill eight semi-truckloads, will eventually be donated by Deere & Co. to the River Bend Foodbank in Moline.
"The food donation ties into the farmer, who ties into the land and the land ties into the equipment," Nicole Schneider, one of the project's leaders, said Tuesday as she surveyed progress on the sculpture. "This will feed 169 families for a year off what we are donating."
