John Deere Classic board members distributed a record $5.29 million Monday to charities throughout and beyond the Quad-Cities.
That record total exceeded last year’s golf tourney disbursement by $950,000 and included an
8 percent supplemental bonus to the PGA Tour event’s popular Birdies for Charity program.
“Try to make 8 percent on your money anywhere right now,” JDC tournament director Clair Peterson said. “Good luck.”
The bonus money comes from profits from a July golf tournament blessed by perfect weather and boosted by top-ranked American golfer Steve Stricker’s successful bid for a record third straight JDC title.
Kristy Ketcham Jackson, director of the JDC’s 18-year-old Birdies for Charity program, said 494 charitable organizations throughout the region collected some $4.5 million in donor pledges, thanks to a record 2,124 birdies the field of pros made over five days at TPC Deere Run in Silvis.
That’s an increase of $600,000 over Birdies for Charity pledges in 2010.
