Another reviewer noted that the base isn't tapped to receive the screws. I was going to use a tap and die set but I still had the original screws ( mine are tapered at the end ) so I figured since the base is aluminum I could probably thread it in w/o tapping the hole first. Before trying to attach to the deck I just oiled the original screws, threaded them in by hand until they were getting a bite at a good alignment and then used a ratchet. Then I backed them out and put the spindle on the deck and again hand started the screws until I could tell they weren't going to ream the threads and tightened with ratchet. I'm no mechanic, but that seemed to work for me.

Better than new
I replaced both spindles on my John Deere mower with these Stens replacements and when I started the mower up the first time and engaged the blades I was amazed at how smoothly the repaired mower deck was. Smoother than the day I brought it home from the dealer. I had always had a complaint about the vibration on this mower, even took it back to the dealer once, but they just told me "well some mowers shake, others don't". Now, finally, it doesn't shake. I especially like the idea that you can put a little grease into these spindles. That should help them last a long time. Signed, Happy in Delaware

Quick Install Nice Quality
Replacement spindle assembly required a bit of preparation before installing but I gave the item five stars because of the overall quality of the replacement part. After a quick stop at the hardware store, I had the spindle ready to install in a few minutes. Like other reviewers I had to replace the mounting screws with another metric 1.25 thread hex head, be careful to purchase the correct length of replacement mounting screws (not too long). The mount for the blade was properly threaded and accepted the old bolts nicely. The bolt holes for the mower deck connection did need to be tapped, so I also purchased a Metric #8 x 1.25 tap (I alread own a tap handle, otherwise you would need a tap handle). The tapping was surprisingly easy as the aluminum threads were easily cut with the steel tap. I used a little bit of olive oil to lubricate the tap.
