YORK BEACH, Maine — York Village firefighter Mike Brown has been dressing up as "Blazs" the Fire Dog for nine years straight at every annual Firefighter Field Day at York Beach. This Sunday was no different.
"It's a morality boost for the kids," said Brown, who painted his face black and white and wore a full-body Dalmatian suit for Sunday's event. "I had a blast."
The day included a parade where Brown rode on top of a John Deere 6x4 Trail Gator, spraying water out of a small hose toward onlookers, and was followed shortly after by a series of competitive firefighter relay races at York Beach Ballpark.
Participating fire departments included York Village, York Beach, Eliot, Berwick, Kittery and Rollinsford, N.H.
"It was good to see the out-of-town guys," said York Village firefighter Armand Gregoire. "Usually when we see them it's in a pretty stressful situation. It's good just to hang out with them."
Gregoire said the field day has been a tradition that has been passed down through generations that serves as a fun event to bring firefighters closer together.
