Standing with about 50 other people in a parking lot near the Interstate 74 bridge in Moline, Tom Holuba tilted his head back so he could stare 200 feet up to the top of the Kone Tower and see the Christmas tree adorning it.
Holuba's father, Hank, who was in the research and development department of Montgomery Elevator Co., came up with the idea of putting a real Christmas tree atop the company's new tower in 1966.
"Dad was a Christmas person," said Tom Holuba, 63, who, like his father, has spent his entire career at Kone and its predecessor, Montgomery.
"He was always ready to put up the lights and tree in the house, and it always had to be a real tree."
Tom Holuba was invited to throw the switch Friday night that would light what will be the last tree to sit atop the tower.
For Christmas 2012, the tree will be on top of the new Kone Centre that is being constructed at the foot of Bass Street Landing.
Bill Dobbelaere worked for Montgomery and Kone for more than 47 years, retiring in 2008. He spent 10 years on the team that put the tree on top of the tower. His last year working on the tree was 2007.
