

SUDDENLY, they are the ‘must-haves’ on modern-day properties with big name machinery manufacturers scrambling to plug gaps in their product line-ups.
We are talking about the new-generation of side-by-side utility vehicles, a name which denotes their two forward facing seats as opposed to the single in-line arrangement associated with All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) – highlighted on models that incorporate a second pillion seat behind the driver.
While tractor sales have been hovering around the 10,000 unit mark over the past few years, there’s been stratospheric interest in lower cost ATVs increasingly able to carry out a range of duties. Incredibly, around 20,000 units are now sold each year.
But with winter approaching the focus is now the burgeoning ranks of side-by-side vehicles that increasingly come with handy roll-over protection bars, also ever more sophisticated cabs better able to provide shelter from Australia’s weather extremes.
Their sound safety track record, however, looks to be their principal sales draw-card.
