The students qualified for nationals after a strong finish at the regional competition in February. In the Agricultural Machinery Service Technician competition, students' knowledge is put to the test in six farming machinery subject areas, including engines, power trains, hydraulics, electrical systems, safety and regulations. Another section of the contest evaluates students' abilities in diagnostics and repair, troubleshooting and calibration/adjustment. John Deere Ag Tech instructor Duane Bouska said that NICC students score well in national competitions frequently because the students are prepared, both through textbook material and hands-on learning. "We work on their skills pretty hard, translating the information from a tech manual into something where students need to apply what they're learning.
