What People Talk About John Deere 650 »
SharilynP asked on Jul 22, 2009: Input on a John Deere 650 Tractor?
yellostrat answered:
A four wheel drive compact is a deal at the price u mentioned....
735 hours is not many hours for that old a machine.....
Does the hour meter have digits beyond the hundreds? If it doesn't I'd wonder about the hours....Generally if the unit appears to have been taken care of it might not matter....
Check the "pins" on the loader. Grab the boom and see if there is any excess play at the pins......If there is it may need new pins....Not a big deal, but..........
Condition of bucket tells much also......
Check all fluids....are they clear/clean. The engine oil....If it looks thick like mud it needs to be changed.
Tires? What kind? Ags? turf? Industrial?
How worn are the tires>? They are expensive to replace. Are the rear tires loaded? If so what are they loaded with. If calcium chloride was used, are there tubes in them...If not the rims will be showing rust..Again expensive to replace.....
If you have pictures you can email them to me....I could tell just looking at it if it is stable.
Was there ever a backhoe on this tractor? If yes, was it 3-pt hitch or frame mounted.....If a 3-point hitch hoe was used on this tractor I would avoid it........
The brush hog............look at the oil in the gear box.....has it been changed? Any leaking? Condition of blades? Start the tractor and turn the brush hog on. Is it excessively noisy?
Drive the unit around. Check that 4wd engages and disengages smoothly. Also move the range selector into the various ranges checking for smooth operation.
Glow plugs....ensure that the glow plugs are operative....Expensive to replace.
Check anti freeze/coolant.
It sounds like this might be a good tractor, but there are some things to consider to truely determine it's worth.
Also, look under the boot on the loader control...look for any leaks....a new loader control valve is at least a grand....
bogdanjones asked on Sep 03, 6118: Is it possible to add a front end loader to a tractor manufactured without hydraulic outputs?
I'll fly away answered:
Pretty much impossible. All the JD front end loader attachments require front end PTO hydraulics to operate it.
