Australian John Senden was justifiably proud of his perseverance after completing an astonishing comeback at the US PGA Tour's Byron Nelson Championship.
Early in the second round, Senden had slumped to four-over. He needed to pick up five strokes simply to make the halfway cut, and he survived with nothing to spare by sinking a five-metre birdie at the 36th hole.
The Queenslander parlayed that hard-earned reprieve into his second best result of the year by shooting 65-64 in the final two rounds to finish seventh behind winner Rory Sabbatini and earn $US217,750 ($A278,275).
"I've given 110 per cent effort every single day of my career and I think that makes a difference," Senden said.
"I was four-over through 23 holes and just had to wake myself up and get back into it. I had a good stretch, got a few good breaks and holed a nice putt on the last hole.
"I had to dig deep to get it back and it tells me something. Every shot counts and I've always believed if you're running 50th after three rounds and fight your way back to 35th place, those points and that money count.
"I think that was the reason I won the John Deere Classic and the Australian Open (in 2006) and the reason I'm standing here today.
SourceWith the launch of its new 8030 agricultural tractors last week, John Deere has fired the first salvo in the off-highway Tier 3 fuel economy wars. While early in the year, many diesel engine manufacturers were positioning their Tier 3 diesels as quivalent to Tier 2 in terms of fuel economy, Deere has now said, on the record, that its new PowerTech Plus 9.0 liter diesel, in the 8030 tractors, will deliver anywhere from 2 percent to over 10 percent better fuel economy. With Tier 3 off-highway regulations starting for diesel engines from 175 hp to 750 hp in January, this is an important announcement. It is also important in that it begins to quantify the mantra of integrated drivetrains that many have been preaching as the best route to meet Tier 3 and Tier 4 regulations.
Far from an across the board declaration of engine fuel economy, Deere was careful to point out that the fuel economy numbers were for this specific engine, in these tractors. And the increase in fuel efficiency came not only from the engine, but from a new engine cooling scheme, electronic control system, the introduction of an IVT (what others call CVT) transmission into these tractors, as well as other horsepower consuming reductions throughout the tractor. Deere did not say how much each of these factors contributed to the increased fuel efficiency.
