In certain parts of central Iowa, you best have two lawn mowers one for cutting grass, and one for racing. One of those places is Carlisle.
Drivers and fans gather the fourth Sunday of the month at Carlisles River Bottom Raceway to race their revved-up riding lawn mowers.
This is the first year of the River Bottom Raceway. The raceway, located just east of Wyckoff Heating & Cooling, along Iowa Highway 5, in Carlisle, was created earlier this year solely for lawn mower racing. The small dirt oval track includes a pit area and bleacher seating. Spectators may also bring their own chairs or blankets to sit and enjoy the action.
More than 25 participants competed in the Oct. 23 race, in seven different classes, for bragging rights and a small trophy.
The competitors come from all over central Iowa for the race, said Doug Baber, an owner of the raceway.
Most of the guys are from Carlisle, Hartford, but weve also got some guys from Newton and Cedar Rapids, Baber said.
