Choosing A Lawn Mower – Things To Consider : : Gardening And Lawn Care

By Ned Dagostino

For many, the frustration happens every year. It’s time to mow the grass, but your old lawn mower won’t start, shuts down, or just makes it a miserable chore. So finally you decide it’s time to get a new one. But choosing a lawn mower is not as easy as it seems.

While there are many factors involved in the decision, start by looking at the big three. Look at the size of your yard, what features you want or need, and the quality of engine you require.

Do you need a riding lawn mower, or is a walk behind mower good enough. Use this rule as a starting point. If your yard is over three-quarters of an acre, then look at riding mowers. If not, a walk behind mower is likely all you need. The walk behind mower is by far the most popular. And if your yard is small, smooth, and doesn’t have a lot of hills, there’s no need to spend extra money on a lot of fancy features. However is your yard is over 1/2 an acre, then one thing you should definitely look at is a self propelled model. These mowers will move forward without any help from you. All you need to do is guide it in the right direction. This make mowing the yard a breeze.

The number one seller has been the Exmark Lazer Z. Best mowing performance wet or dry and fast cutting speeds. They have led the market in deck design.

The fastest cutting (up to 15 MPH) and best quality machine (lifetime warranty on frame, forks & front caster bearings) is probably the Dixie Chopper. Stainless steel construction and a top of the line model with 33HP engine. http://www.dixiechopper.com/

Kubota builds a fantastic diesel engine. I like their zeros turns, but in the commercial world you just don't see a lot of people running Kubota. I heard early on that this unit had spindle problems. I don't know if that's true any more. Also, in a commercial application you need fast access to parts. Stick to the main suppliers of zero turns used in commercial operations and you shouldn't have a problem getting parts. There are few Kubota dealers in my area and parts are always a problem for my Kubota tractor. I don't need many parts for that tractor, but even Kubota parts wear-out.
