A Taupo logging truck driver travelling on the wrong side of the road collided head on with a ute killing a forestry worker, a Taupo court was told.
Shane Adrian Haskell pleaded guilty in Taupo District Court this morning to aggravated careless driving causing death and injury.
Haskell, 35, was driving a Kenworth truck and trailer on the Maungatera Road, a winding private forestry road near Hatepe, 20 kilometres south of Taupo on April 8 around 3pm.
Haskell rounded a right hand bend, on the right-hand side of the road and collided with a ute carrying three forestry workers heading home after finishing work.
Front-seat passenger Mark Reynolds of Taupo was killed.
Walter McKeown, who was driving, suffered serious leg and arm fractures and later had his right leg amputated below the knee.
A third man, Benjamin Savage, suffered a broken crib cage.
The road is used by logging trucks but access is allowed to the public with permits, the court was told.
