Answer : Hello,
That happens to mine now and then, and always during a blizzard when I’m trying to clear the driveway.
The center sliding sheave on the variator is not sliding and the belts are binding up. You can tell right away because the clutch pedal feels different and will not go down all the way.
There are a couple of causes for this. Your variator may be way out of adjustment due to the new belts. On the side of the cowling by the variator arm, you will see two bolts. They may be covered with caps, but most tractors have lost the caps. One is the pivot and one is the adjuster. Run the motor wide open in neutral and put the variator full forward. (This last position is the adjuster position and not a speed increase.) Loosen the pivot bolt and loosen the adjuster bolt. The arm should move and then you tighten the bolt. This almost never works on an old tractor by the way. I end up moving the arm with the blade of a screwdriver. Just move it a bit, and try the tractor. Repeat until you have 5 speed changes. If you try to get them all, you will end up frustrated. On a brand new machine there is 6, but good luck getting all on an old one. On an older unit with heavy wear, you are lucky to get 4.
