Melissa Bowers said her husband was very proud of his hulking dark-green-with-black trim snowblower. It had all the features, like heated handles and a chute that swiveled with the push of a button.

And when you have something like that, you help others, Bowers said. Stephen Bowers did just that, clearing out their elderly neighbors' driveway during the October snowstorm.

But this past weekend, someone took the MTD Yard-Man from their Springettsbury Township carport in the 2100 block of North Sherman Street, Bowers said.

"We had to use it in the early snow," so it had a cover on it but was unlocked, she said. "Usually it's chained and locked."

Police said the theft was one of five that have been committed in the area within the past month.

Most of the thefts occurred during the day -- including the Bowers' -- although some were through unlocked doors. In others, the thieves forced their way through doors, said Springettsbury Township Police Sgt. Dan Stump.
