Another vote for Drip-Line Gardening and perhaps one of the drip-irrigation kits available at garden stores and big-box stores. Drip irrigation is subject to fewer restrictions than sprinklers because it uses water more efficiently.
Problem: I don't have enough to do since I retired. I want a volunteer opportunity where I can have fun, learn more about gardening and do something significant.
Gift: Membership to the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center or the San Antonio Botanical Garden. Each organization offers training and volunteer opportunities. Mitchell Lake membership costs $40; www .tx.audubon.org/Mitchell.html. Botanical garden memberships start at $45; www.sabot.org .
Problem: With this crummy soil, hot weather and drought, how can I have a lush landscape?
Gift: Get your frustrated gardener a copy of the San Antonio Landscape Care Guide . Plants that perform well here are organized by season, helping the garden look pretty year-round. The guide costs $8 at local nurseries, such as Rainbow Gardens, Milberger's, Fanick's Gardening Center and Antique Rose Emporium.
