PASS CHRISTIAN — Miss America joined hundreds of volunteers in Pass Christian on Saturday for a day of cleaning, digging, building, planting and painting to start this year’s Great American Cleanup.
Volunteers pitched in across the city, from the east end fire station — where members of the Pass Christian High School powerlifting team planted new greenery — to Friendship Park on the town’s west side. The small park is a rallying point for the neighbors there, whose tight-knit community was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
“Today has been one of the most meaningful days of my life, to see so many people rallying to help us, said Sharon Sofford, one of the neighbors, as she looked out at the small park, which was busy with activity Saturday morning. Neighbors, friends, volunteers from the Pass Christian Garden Club and more than two dozen airmen from Keesler Air Force Base’s 332nd Training Squadron planted new shrubs and flowers, cleaned up and mulched around existing trees and built a small gazebo.
“We have lost so much at this west end of the city,” said neighbor Sydney Wall. “But any time you plant something, it’s a sign of hope, because it means that you believe you will be here to see... Source
