HOUSTON, Del. Whenever Sam Yoder added to his collection of farm toys, pedal tractors and antique tractors, most times he brought home more than the item itself.
Yoder still recalls the stories told to him by the tractors’ previous owners, how and when he bought them and in most cases what he paid for them.
“There’s a history to a lot of these tractors,” he said, walking among the old John Deeres and Farmalls in his barn. Among them is a 1955 John Deere 70.
“That’s the one that got me started,” he said.
Yoder said he bought the tractor in 1990 from longtime friend Dwight Warnick of Greenwood, Del.
“He used to cut my hair when I was 15,” Yoder, who will soon turn 77, said of Warnick.
When Warnick recently celebrated his 100th birthday at Yoder’s farm, Yoder brought the tractor out for the party as well.
“I started it up for him and asked if it sounded all right,” Yoder said. “He could tell by how it sounded if it was running well or not. He thought it ran good.”
