SOUTH KINGSTOWN — South Kingstown has not added a liquor store license since 1971, and town records show the quest for that one was lengthy and ended in a split vote.

On Feb. 10, 1971, seven months after the application was received, former Town Councilman Edward Costanza of Wakefield was granted the fourth Class A liquor license for Gene’s Liquors, now Wakefield Liquors, which he proposed for the Dale Carlia Shopping Center. State law ties the number of liquor licenses a town can issue to population. Towns with fewer than 20,000 residents are allowed one liquor store per 4,000 residents; larger towns are allowed one per 6,000 residents. The town was nearing the magic number of 16,000, which would allow a fourth license. Already in existence were Geaber’s Liquors – the third store to gain a license, only a few years earlier – was located on what was then called Tower Hill Road (now Old Tower Hill Road); McGrath’s Package Store at 399 Main St. (now Sweeney’s Wine and Spirits – the building was renumbered when the 9-11 system was put into place and is now 408 Main St.), and Patsy’s Package Store at 218 1/2 High St., Peace Dale, later renumbered as 520 High St. Also during...
