The new year has reminded me about the many lists of "the century's great inventions" that came out 12 years ago with the arrival of the new millennium.
There's no particular reason I've been thinking about that. I mean, it really was a very long time ago.
It's just what happens sometimes when I'm engaged in mindless labor, like lawn mowing, leaf raking, snow shoveling and vacuuming the living-room floor.
Anyway, I think the garage and workshop may have been given short shrift on those lists of great inventions.
So, with nothing better to do while I mowed, raked, shoveled or vacuumed, I started mentally compiling a list of my own. Eventually, of course, I'd come up with enough stuff to -- ta-da! -- build a column around.
