    Now more than ever, people want to know how to grow their own food and save money in the garden, said Centralia garden center owner Jim Green.

    “This year we seem to be selling tons of blueberries, grapes and other fruits,” he said. “Not only are people worried about money, but they’re also worried about the safety of the food supply. A lot of it’s coming from south of the border, and they don’t have the same restrictions on chemical use.”

    Green, who has owned and operated Pioneer West on Tower Avenue in Centralia for the last eight years, is just one of the speakers at this weekend’s Home and Garden Show at the Yard Birds Mall and Event Center.

    Green’s presentation, “Kick the Recession in the Bud and Grow Your Own Food,” tonight at 5 o’clock, will address everything from container gardening to organic versus synthetic.
